The Garden Centre

Our topic this month is plants. We are learning all about the parts of a plant, how to plant seeds and bulbs and what plants need to survive.

In preparation for our topic we went on a trip to the garden centre. Here we got to see all kinds of different flowers and plants.

And of course, we HAD to have a look at the fish tanks before we left!

Our trip definitely got us ready to open up our own garden centre in our classroom.

We also planted some grass seeds in pots and are watching and waiting eagerly to see if they have grown. We have estimated it will take 10 days for the seeds to start to grow!

Our small world is also full of plants, flowers and trees. The children have loved using the playdough for their creations!

Christmas in room 4

We were very busy in room 4 on the run up to Christmas!

Have a look at some of the activities that took place ...

Santa's Workshop was in full swing during December. The elves were very busy in the role play corner making toys for boys and girls. They made sure to check the naughty and nice list before any gifts were wrapped!

We wrote letters to Santa by the fireplace and read some Christmas stories too

We went on a visit to Coláiste Bríde. The children were fascinated by the winter wonderland that was set up for them in the school. We were very grateful to the students of Coláiste Bríde for letting us visit!

Elves made a visit to our classroom during the month of December ... the excitement was contagious !!

We battled the wind and rain to post our letters to the North Pole. We each made a wish and sent the letters on their journey ...

Santa's sleigh appeared in our room one morning! We had such fun packing it full with toys and delivering the presents to boys and girls.

The clothes shop

Our clothes shop has opened and room 4 are having great fun dressing up and buying new clothes.

The boys and girls are working hard on their customer service, making sure to say 'next please' and 'thank you'.

It has been great fun wriggling into fancy costumes, learning how to zip up coats and tie shoe laces.

Take a look at some of the outfits the children bought in the shop:

Take some time to practice tying shoe laces and zipping up coats with your child. Small fingers can find these tasks a little tricky!

Busy builders

There has been a lot of construction work happening around Scoil Mhuire. We decided to get in on the action and have our own building site in room 4!

Our first step was to go and visit the real builders and get some practical advice:

Then we set up our own  building site in our classroom:

We used lots of different tools to build! Ask your child to name one of those tools, they were very good at learning the names.

We also used big building blocks called Jaggo blocks. The blocks are a fantastic resource newly purchased by the school. The children absolutely love building and using their imaginations to create wonderful designs.

Now we have to go and build some houses for three scared little pigs .... we think we are up for the challenge!
